First Blog Post, Season 16/17
First I’d like to start off by saying welcome to all our new players in the team. There is so much talent and enthusiasm coming in and adding to such an already highly rated club. The foundations and achievements of last season can only be bettered by the new injection of ability and energy. Also welcome to our two new coaches Craig Beveridge and Mattie Hollingworth of our second team, hope that you’ve enjoyed the first couple of weeks, if anyone hasn’t seen the two coaches interviews please feel free to go have a look, it’s under the news bar.
Hope that everyone had a good summer and done interesting things, seeing everyone again just makes me appreciate being at university and being involved with this great club. If I haven’t introduced myself or talked to you yet, I’m Rachel! But call me Doc, I run the social media and try and take pretty pictures. Looking to keep a blog every week/two and engage the club more in media, and to get everyone up to date. Anyone wanting to announce anything on the website or have any ideas I’m happy to hear from you. Although I don’t play football #airkick, the club makes my university experience what it is and hopefully everyone who has just joined will appreciate how much of your university experience is made by SULFC.
The first team have now played two games, and won two games in fanatic style. Winning 10-0 at home against newly promoted Edinburgh 2’s, and also winning away against Robert Gordon University 13-0 in Aberdeen. Great team performances, and individually every player has shown what they can offer on the park. Starting off by congratulating our top goal scorer so far Kim Guthrie, only two games into the season and she has managed to grab 8 goals. Kim is showing her qualities on the park as much as she is off it, as our newly promoted president, think everyone appreciates how well she has organised everything so far. Katy Morris has 4 to her tally, and Beth McKay has 3.
The first game at home saw four debutants in the squad. Hayley Sinclair, Ruth Clark, Katy Morris and Ann Taylor. Both Sinclair and Clark managed to grab a goal on their debuts for the team. An all round emphatic team performance, a very controlled and consistent performance, with clinical finishing, a great way to start the season.
The Second team got their campaign off to a fantastic start with a hard fought 1-0 away win to St. Andrews. A goal decided the game from Rachel Armstrong in the first half. Coming into her third year Leek’s dedication is unquestionable, and now she’s lost a tooth to prove it. The second team have many new recruits just like the first team, several players making their debuts on Wednesday.
Initiation I think fair to say was a success, thank you to Ang and Jules for making it such an amazing night, your door and boo costumes were genius. The costumes were all bloody brilliant, Rozz was impressive, Mike and Sully were on point, but there could only be one winner. Cheye Pollard and Lucy Park won the costume competition and deservedly, great effort lads with the velcro. Would like to wish Lucy a speedy recovery from her broken foot, our rugby internationalist’s effort to come out Wednesday was inspiring. Every fresher looked absolutely class, and our girls in the yellow made some effort to. You know it’s an eventful night when you lose a shoe and a crutch. It was for me personally one of the best ‘welcome drinks’ I’ve been to. Hopefully we’ll have many great nights as good as that one this semester.
Looking ahead, as both teams are playing at home next week! Our first team face Glasgow, and our second team take on Aberdeen in the reverse fixture from last week. With both teams playing at home we will be having our match tea’s at the William Wallace, so please everyone come, we will be doing man of the match and d of the day. The sandwiches aren’t as good as the chips and sausages but we always have a good laugh at match tea’s, especially when we win.
Quick mention to our Premier League team who are looking to finish of their season strongly after such a great second half to their season. Tomorrow they take on Spartans away; they have a home game against Aberdeen the next Sunday so if anyone is free come and watch the girls.
We have our meet the team segment on the website, last week Ang and Kim took part, this week coming Lauren Eadie and Juliette Garner will feature.
Hope everyone is starting to settle into university and are finding their feet, only 4 weeks into the semester and there are all ready a lot of positive things to get excited about. The good mood on and off the park is only growing and hopefully both our teams can play some great football and win their games on Wednesday. Enjoy the rest of your weekends! And good luck to the Stirling University Premier League team tomorrow against Spartans!
Much love Doc x
